Where it came from
Brynhildr in the Darkness is a 2014 television anime adaptation of the seinen manga series created by Lynn Okamoto. Produced by the studio ARMS and directed by Kenichi Imaizumi, the series follows high school student Ryouta Murakami and a mysterious girl named Neko Kuroha, who shares the appearance of his deceased childhood friend. The project emerged during a period of significant interest in darker, science-fiction-tinged fantasy narratives within the seinen manga demographic.
The production sought to balance the intense, often brutal survival themes of Okamoto’s original work with a distinct visual style characterized by the studio's focus on character-driven suspense. Upon its release, the series garnered attention for its complex plot threads and dramatic tonal shifts, though it faced critique regarding the pacing required to compress a sprawling manga narrative into a standard television season format.
