Where it came from
Brotherhood Final Fantasy XV was released in 2016 as a five-episode original net animation produced by A-1 Pictures to serve as a narrative prequel to the video game Final Fantasy XV. Conceived as part of the broader Final Fantasy XV Universe multimedia project, the series was designed to provide deeper insight into the foundational bond between Prince Noctis Lucis Caelum and his three companions—Ignis, Gladiolus, and Prompto—before the events of the main game.
The series was directed by Soichi Masui, who aimed to ground the high-fantasy setting in authentic character-driven drama. By focusing on intimate, non-combat moments and the history of the four protagonists, the animation sought to establish an emotional stakes for the audience prior to the game's launch. It was well-received for its character development and its ability to contextualize the central friendship that defines the Final Fantasy XV experience.
