Buddy Complex

Buddy Complex was produced by the acclaimed animation studio Sunrise and aired in early 2014 as part of the winter television anime season. The series was conceived as a high-concept mecha drama that blends the familiar tropes of the genre with a time-travel narrative, focusing on the relationship between high school student Aoba Watase and the pilot Dio Weinberg. Directed by Yasuhiro Irie, the production aimed to modernize the classic robot-action formula by emphasizing intricate tactical maneuvers and the psychological weight of an interdimensional war.

The character designs were handled by Tomoshige Inayoshi and Asako Inayoshi, who sought to capture a clean, heroic aesthetic that would resonate with contemporary audiences while nodding to Sunrise’s storied history of robot anime. Upon its release, the series was noted for its polished animation quality and the unique 'coupling system' mechanic that defined its combat sequences. While it occupies a niche space in the studio's broader catalog, it remains a notable example of the mid-2010s experimental approach to the mecha genre.
