Where it came from
Buddy Go! is a shojo manga series created by the artist Minori Kurosaki, serialized in the Japanese magazine Ribon starting in 2015 and concluding in 2017. The narrative follows Ai, a shy girl who gains confidence through cross-dressing to perform as a male idol, exploring themes of identity, fame, and the complex dynamics of the entertainment industry. The 2016 special edition content emerged during the height of the series' popularity, reflecting the target demographic's interest in the glamorous yet challenging world of Japanese idol culture.
The visual design of the series is characteristic of contemporary Ribon magazine aesthetic, featuring expressive character designs that emphasize the contrast between the protagonist’s mundane life and her vibrant on-stage persona. Minori Kurosaki focused on dynamic panel layouts to convey the energy of music performances, a stylistic choice that was well-received by readers who appreciated the blend of romance and backstage drama. The special editions served to deepen fan engagement with the series by providing extra context and character development beyond the standard volumes.
