Where it came from
Business Fish was produced by the Japanese animation studio TIA and debuted in 2019 as a short-form television series. The program centers on a protagonist who is literally a fish navigating the mundane, often absurd challenges of a modern corporate office environment. The series uses this surreal premise to offer a satirical take on Japanese workplace culture, characterized by rigid hierarchies and the repetitive nature of administrative tasks.
The design of the show leans into a distinctively minimalist and deadpan aesthetic, reflecting the dry humor inherent in its narrative. By juxtaposing the aquatic nature of the central character with the pressures of contemporary business life, the creators aimed to highlight the feeling of being a small, unremarkable cog in a vast organizational machine. The series gained attention for its offbeat tone and short, digestible episode format, typical of late-night experimental animation blocks.
