The slice-of-life battle story is set in a future that has neither World War III nor an alien invasion—just an ordinary future set after our current age. In this world, robots are part of everyday life, and they contribute in various aspects of society. "Shinki" are 15-centimeter-tall (about 6-inch-tall) cute partners made to assist humans. Equipped with intelligence and emotions, they devote themselves to serving their "Masters."
These Shinki can even be equipped with weapons and armor to fight each other. Such Shinki are named "Busou Shinki" (literally, "armed divine princesses"). In particular, the Shinki Ann (Arnval), Aines (Altines), and Lene (Altlene) serve a high school freshman named Masato. Things change when a new Shinki, the bellicose Strarf, joins them.

Where it came from
The 2012 Busou Shinki anime series was produced by 8-bit and licensed by Sentai Filmworks, stemming from the popular Konami line of customizable action figures known as Shinki. These figures, famously featuring designs by renowned illustrators like Humikane Shimada, were originally conceived as a fusion of fashion dolls and mecha-inspired armor. The series was designed to breathe narrative life into these characters, focusing on the domestic and competitive relationships between the robotic Shinki and their human masters.
Upon its release, the series was received as a lighthearted, slice-of-life take on the mecha genre, distancing itself from more gritty military themes to emphasize the personality and customization potential inherent in the source material. While it functioned as a promotional vehicle for the expanding toy line, critics noted the series for its character-driven approach and its faithful adaptation of the aesthetic established by the diverse group of artists who worked on the physical figure line.
