Where it came from
By the Grace of the Gods, known in Japan as Kami-tachi ni Hirowareta Otoko, originated as a light novel series written by Roy and illustrated by Ririnra. First serialized on the user-generated novel publishing website Shōsetsuka ni Narō in 2014, the story centers on Ryoma Takebayashi, a middle-aged Japanese salaryman who dies and is reincarnated in a fantasy world. Given the freedom to live alone in the forest, he dedicates his time to researching slimes, eventually leading to a life of adventure and community involvement.
The 2020 anime adaptation was produced by Maho Film and directed by Takeyuki Yanase. The production aimed to emphasize the 'slow life' subgenre of isekai, focusing on a gentle, low-conflict narrative rather than high-stakes action. Critics and audiences noted the series for its soothing atmosphere and character-driven pacing, which aligned with the broader trend of pastoral fantasy storytelling popular in early 2020s anime production.
