Where it came from
C3, released in 2011 by Starchild Records, is an anime television series adaptation of the light novel series C3: Cube × Cursed × Curious, written by Hazuki Minase. The production was helmed by the studio Silver Link, under the direction of Shin Oonuma. The narrative centers on a high school boy who discovers a mysterious black cube that transforms into a girl, leading him into a supernatural conflict involving cursed objects. The studio aimed for a blend of lighthearted high school comedy and dark, action-oriented supernatural mystery, a common stylistic choice in the light novel adaptations of that era.
The series is noted for its visual identity, which reflects the aesthetic preferences of the early 2010s anime market, emphasizing character-driven storytelling within a genre often termed 'school supernatural.' Upon its release, it garnered attention for its unique premise regarding personified cursed items, though critical reception was mixed, with audiences often divided between those who enjoyed the tonal shifts and those who found the plot execution uneven. It remains a representative title from the Starchild Records catalog during their active period in the anime industry.
