Where it came from
Canaan emerged in 2009 as an experimental anime production from P.A.Works, conceptualized by Type-Moon's Kinoko Nasu and Takashi Takeuchi. Originating from a scenario written for the Nintendo Wii visual novel 428: Shibuya Scramble, the series serves as a loose narrative expansion rather than a direct adaptation. It was designed to explore themes of synesthesia and international intrigue, grounding high-octane action in a stylized, atmospheric portrayal of Shanghai.
The character designs were handled by Takashi Takeuchi, whose signature aesthetic defines the visual identity of the Type-Moon universe. Directed by Masahiro Ando, the production focused on fluid, cinematic choreography that pushed the technical boundaries of television animation at the time. Upon its release, it received positive recognition for its ambitious visual storytelling and distinct directorial style, standing out as a notable entry in the studio's growing portfolio.
