Where it came from
Released in 1998 by NHK Enterprises, this special production—often referred to as the first Cardcaptor Sakura original video animation—served as a supplementary recap and character-focused side story during the height of the original anime's initial television run. It was conceived as a lighthearted retrospective narrated by Tomoyo Daidouji, designed to highlight the magical girl aesthetic and the elaborate costumes central to the series' appeal.
The animation reflects the high-production values synonymous with Madhouse studio’s collaboration with director Morio Asaka, who sought to capture the charm of CLAMP's original manga illustrations. By centering the narrative on Tomoyo’s perspective as a videographer, the creators offered a meta-commentary on the series itself, which was warmly received by fans as a dedicated tribute to the bond between the lead characters.
