Where it came from
Released in 2017, Sakura and the Two Bears serves as a narrative bridge between the conclusion of the original Cardcaptor Sakura anime series and the launch of the Clear Card arc. Produced by Studio Madhouse, the OVA was crafted to satisfy long-term fans' anticipation for the continuation of Sakura Kinomoto’s story, specifically addressing the romantic developments between Sakura and Syaoran Li as they prepare for his return to Hong Kong.
The production sought to maintain the visual aesthetic that defined the series in the late 1990s while incorporating updated character designs suited for modern animation standards. Directed by Morio Asaka, the project was received as a heartfelt homage to the original source material by CLAMP, emphasizing the emotional growth of the characters rather than the high-stakes magical conflicts that characterized earlier episodes.
