Catman Series II

The Catman Series II is a digital short-form animation series produced for Fuji TV, emerging from the early 2000s Japanese experimental animation movement. It was created as an ONA (Original Net Animation) project, designed to capitalize on the rising accessibility of high-speed internet in Japan. The series centers on the titular character, an anthropomorphic cat living a mundane, often surreal urban life, reflecting the minimalist aesthetic and cynical, dry humor that defined much of the indie web animation scene during that period.

The character design and minimalist animation style are widely attributed to the creative vision of the artist known as Frogman, whose work sought to contrast simple, lo-fi visual execution with complex, observational narratives. The series was well-received by audiences for its quirky, low-stakes storytelling and its ability to capture the anxieties of modern Japanese youth. It remains a notable relic of a time when the internet began to serve as a primary platform for experimental auteur animation outside of the traditional studio system.
