Where it came from
The Cøde:Breaker OVA was produced by studio Kinema Citrus in 2012 as a tie-in to the supernatural action manga series created by Akimine Kamijyo. Released alongside the manga's later volumes, these original video animations were designed to bridge gaps in the narrative and provide fans with a visual representation of key story arcs that were not fully adapted into the concurrent television series. The project sought to capture the series' dark, gothic aesthetic, focusing on the character Rei Ogami and his role as a clandestine vigilante who delivers judgment to criminals.
Kinema Citrus utilized a stylized visual language to translate Kamijyo’s detailed character designs into motion, focusing on fluid combat sequences and high-contrast lighting to emphasize the series' themes of moral ambiguity. The OVA received a modest reception, primarily appreciated by established readers of the source material who valued the additional character development and the studio's stylistic choices in handling the show's pyrotechnic supernatural effects.
