Where it came from
Cocoon – One Summer of Girlhood is a 2025 animated feature film produced by Studio Sasayuri and directed by Hitomi Tateno. The project was born from a long-term development process aimed at capturing the ephemeral nature of adolescence in rural Japan, drawing inspiration from the director's extensive experience as an animator at Studio Ghibli. Tateno sought to create a hand-drawn aesthetic that prioritizes atmospheric storytelling and fluid character movement over traditional blockbuster pacing.
The film represents a deliberate commitment to traditional 2D animation techniques, a hallmark of Studio Sasayuri’s mission to preserve artisanal craft in a digital-heavy industry. By focusing on intimate, lived-in environments and subtle emotional shifts, the design and direction intend to evoke a nostalgic, meditative experience. Upon its release, the work was noted for its technical precision and its ability to ground high-concept animation in the quiet realities of daily life.
