Where it came from
The 2022 Chainsaw Man television series was produced by studio MAPPA, marking the highly anticipated adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga of the same name. The series emerged from a significant cultural moment for modern manga, as Fujimoto’s work gained a massive international following for its subversion of traditional shonen tropes and its unique blend of visceral horror, dark comedy, and profound character studies.
Director Ryu Nakayama led the production, aiming to capture the cinematic, fast-paced intensity of the original panels while utilizing a sophisticated blend of 2D animation and 3D CGI to handle the complex mechanical designs of the protagonist's transformed state. Upon its release, the series received widespread critical attention for its distinct visual identity and ambitious production values, sparking extensive discourse regarding its experimental direction and adaptation choices.
