Chainsaw Man: Shikaku-hen

Chainsaw Man: Shikaku-hen, or the Bomb Girl arc, represents a pivotal segment of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga adapted for the screen by Studio MAPPA. Following the success of the initial anime season, this arc was selected for feature-length treatment to maintain the high production values and cinematic pacing characteristic of MAPPA’s ambitious approach to the franchise. The narrative continues the journey of Denji, focusing on his complex encounter with Reze, a character whose dual nature serves as a thematic exploration of intimacy and artificiality within the series.

The production design reflects the studio’s commitment to blending traditional cel-style aesthetics with sophisticated 3D integration, a hallmark of director Ryu Nakayama’s vision for the series. By moving away from standard episodic television formats, the studio aimed to heighten the visceral, gritty atmosphere of Fujimoto’s original illustrations. Upon its announcement, the project was met with significant anticipation from the global animation community, praised for its willingness to experiment with visual storytelling and its faithful, yet elevated, rendition of the source material’s dark, surreal tone.
