Chair

The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, designed by Charles and Ray Eames, was released by Herman Miller in 1956. Conceived as a modern take on the traditional English club chair, the design aimed to provide a warm, receptive look that balanced industrial manufacturing with handcrafted comfort. The Eameses utilized molded plywood shells and leather upholstery, seeking to create a refuge from the stresses of post-war life through ergonomic support and tactile luxury.

Upon its introduction, the chair was marketed as a high-end luxury piece, a departure from the duo's earlier focus on mass-produced, affordable furniture. It was met with critical acclaim for its innovative use of shock mounts and its sleek, mid-century aesthetic. The design has since become a standard of 20th-century furniture, appearing frequently in cinema as a shorthand for sophisticated, established status or mid-century intellectualism.
