Sakura Momoko's teacher assigns the third grade to draw an image based on their favorite song to enter a contest. Momoko loves a song she recently learned during her music class and is anxious to make a good drawing based on it. On her way to meet her relatives in Shizuoka, she meets Shouko Kimura, a university student who occasionally draws portraits at the local train station and plans to also participate in an art contest. Fascinated by her illustrations, Sakura meets Kimura once again. Shouko is enchanted by Momoko's sympathy and honesty. They quickly become friends and end up inspiring each other in their own way.

Where it came from
Released in 1992, Chibi Maruko-chan: Watashi no Suki na Uta stands as the first feature-length film adaptation of Momoko Sakura's beloved manga series. Produced by Nippon Animation, the film was designed to expand upon the nostalgic, slice-of-life charm that defined the television anime, shifting the focus toward the imaginative inner world of the protagonist, Maruko. The narrative weaves together original segments with musical sequences, reflecting the series' reputation for blending humorous daily observation with poignant reflections on childhood.
The film's visual identity remains deeply rooted in Sakura's distinct, minimalist aesthetic, which was adapted by the studio to support a more cinematic scope. While the television series often focused on school life, this film was crafted to delve deeper into Maruko's artistic interests and her friendship with an older student named Onee-san, who shares a passion for painting. Upon its release, it was well-received by audiences for maintaining the gentle, authentic spirit of the source material while demonstrating the emotional range of the iconic character.
