Circus

Circus, published by TASCHEN, stands as a monumental visual history of the traveling circus, capturing the spectacle that defined global entertainment from the 18th century through the modern era. Compiled and edited by Noel Daniel, the work was designed to serve as a comprehensive archival record of the circus arts, featuring a vast collection of rare lithographs, posters, and archival photography. The project reflects a meticulous curation process, drawing from international collections to trace the evolution of the circus ring, from traditional equestrian displays to the high-wire acts that captivated early twentieth-century audiences.

The publication is celebrated for its immersive design and physical scale, often produced in the publisher’s signature oversized format. It was conceived as a tribute to the aesthetics of vintage carnival culture, emphasizing the vibrant, often surreal visual language of circus marketing and performance. Upon its release, the volume was well-received by critics and historians for successfully elevating ephemeral circus ephemera into a cohesive academic and visual narrative, effectively preserving the legacy of an art form that has largely vanished from the contemporary cultural landscape.
