Where it came from
City Hunter premiered in 1987, produced by the legendary studio Sunrise and based on the popular manga by Tsukasa Hojo. The series follows the exploits of Ryo Saeba, a private detective and marksman operating in the underworld of Shinjuku. It arrived at the height of the 1980s action-comedy boom, blending gritty urban crime investigations with slapstick humor and a distinctive visual style that captured the energetic atmosphere of Tokyo during the bubble era.
The character designs and animation were crafted to balance Hojo's detailed, realistic aesthetic with the fluid action sequences required for weekly television. The series became a defining staple of Japanese pop culture, well-received for its charismatic lead and iconic musical score. While it faced censorship and localization challenges in international markets, its legacy persists as a benchmark of the buddy-cop subgenre within the anime medium.
