Where it came from
Citrus is a 2018 anime television series produced by the studio Passione, based on the serialized manga created by Saburouta. The narrative follows Yuzu Aihara, a fashionable city girl who finds her life upended when she transfers to a restrictive all-girls school and discovers that her new step-sister, Mei, is the student council president. The adaptation emerged during a period of rising interest in yuri genre titles within the mainstream anime industry, aiming to translate the manga's intense emotional conflicts and stylistic character designs into a serialized format.
The production was directed by Takeo Takahashi, who sought to emphasize the dramatic tension and shifting power dynamics between the two protagonists. The visual style relies on expressive character work and a distinctive color palette that mirrors the series' title, intended to evoke the bittersweet nature of the central relationship. While the series received mixed reviews regarding its pacing and thematic handling of complex interpersonal boundaries, it remains a notable entry in Passione’s early portfolio and is recognized for its contribution to the visibility of yuri-themed media in global anime markets.
