City Hunter: .357 Magnum

City Hunter: .357 Magnum was produced by Sunrise and released in 1989 as the first feature-length film in the long-running City Hunter franchise. Following the success of the television series, which debuted in 1987, the film was created to capitalize on the popularity of Tsukasa Hojo's manga. It maintains the series' characteristic blend of hard-boiled detective fiction, comedic misadventures, and urban settings, shifting the tone to accommodate a cinematic runtime while retaining the core cast of Ryo Saeba and Kaori Makimura.

The design and animation direction for this project were handled by the studio's seasoned team, aiming to provide a more detailed visual experience than the weekly television broadcast permitted. The production focused on enhancing the atmospheric portrayal of Shinjuku, which serves as a central character in the narrative. Upon its release, the film was well-received by the existing fan base, solidifying the franchise's place as a staple of late 1980s Japanese animation and cementing the legacy of its iconic lead protagonist.
