City Hunter: Bay City Wars

Released in 1990, City Hunter: Bay City Wars stands as a notable entry in the long-running franchise created by Tsukasa Hojo. Produced by the studio Sunrise, this feature-length original video animation was crafted during the height of the series' popularity, capitalizing on the transition of Ryo Saeba’s gritty yet comedic detective adventures into high-stakes, cinematic storytelling. The production was aimed at expanding the narrative scope of the City Hunter universe beyond the episodic structure of the television series.

The film’s design reflects the late 1980s and early 1990s aesthetic of Japanese animation, characterized by sharp character models and detailed urban environments. Directed by Kenji Kodama, the project sought to maintain the balance between Hojo's signature action sequences and the lighthearted, often slapstick humor that defined the protagonist's interactions. Upon its release, it was well-received by fans of the source manga as a faithful and technically proficient extension of the established City Hunter style.
