Clannad

Clannad originated as a visual novel developed by Key, released in 2004, and was adapted into a 23-episode anime television series by Kyoto Animation, which aired in Japan between 2007 and 2008. The series was produced as part of the studio's broader effort to translate Key's emotionally resonant narratives—known for their blend of supernatural elements and domestic drama—into the medium of animation. Kyoto Animation, under the direction of Tatsuya Ishihara, focused on capturing the intimate atmospheric quality of the original game, emphasizing the depth of its character-driven storytelling.

The character designs were overseen by Kazumi Ikeda, who adapted the original artistic vision of Itaru Hinoue for the screen. The production is widely regarded for its high technical standards in character animation and its score, which helped define the visual language of late-2000s melancholic dramas. While the series initially garnered a niche following among international fans of Japanese animation, it gained substantial acclaim for its narrative structure and the emotional weight of its second season, Clannad After Story, becoming a cornerstone of the slice-of-life genre.
