CJ7: The Cartoon

CJ7: The Cartoon, released in 2010, serves as an animated companion piece to Stephen Chow's 2008 live-action science fiction comedy, CJ7. Following the success of the original film, which explored themes of poverty, fatherhood, and an extraterrestrial pet, production companies including Star Overseas sought to expand the franchise’s reach into the children's animation market. The project was conceived as a way to retell and extend the story of Dicky and his alien companion, CJ7, utilizing the colorful, expressive aesthetic typical of early 2010s regional animation.

The film’s design leaned heavily into the established character models from the live-action production, albeit simplified for a traditional 2D animated format to appeal to a younger demographic. While the live-action original was noted for its blend of slapstick humor and heartfelt drama, the animated iteration received a more muted critical response. Critics generally viewed the film as a direct-to-market extension designed to capitalize on the intellectual property's popularity rather than offering the thematic depth found in Chow's preceding feature film work.
