Provenance

Where it came from

The Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2: Flash Specials were produced by studio Sunrise and released in 2008 as a series of short, comedic ONA (Original Net Animation) segments to accompany the broadcast of the second season of the anime. These episodes were designed to offer a lighthearted departure from the series' intense political drama, utilizing a distinct, simplified 'chibi' art style that allowed the animation team to explore the lighter side of the cast's complex dynamics.

The character designs for these shorts were overseen by the creative team at Sunrise, who collaborated with original character concept artists CLAMP to maintain a recognizable aesthetic while pivoting into the gag-comedy genre. These specials were received as a beloved peripheral to the main narrative, providing fans with a humorous look at the characters' daily lives that contrasted sharply with the high-stakes rebellion central to the main series plot.
