"I" died and was kicked out of the cycle of reincarnation because of the sin "I" committed. An angel told me that "I" won a lottery and he gave me a chance to remember the sin. My spirit possessed the body of the 14-year-old boy Makoto, who committed suicide and "I" tried to recollect my memory. "I" felt distressed by the terrible circumstances of Makoto and the fact that "I" was borrowing his body. "I" have started to realize that people are hurting each other because the world is too colorful to distinguish the true color of themselves from others.
Based on an award-winning first person narrative novel by Mori Eto. The movie won several awards in Japan.

Where it came from
Colorful: The Motion Picture was released in 2010 by the renowned animation studio Sunrise. Directed by Keiichi Hara and adapted from Eto Mori’s 1998 novel, the film emerged during a period when Japanese animation was increasingly exploring darker, more psychological themes for broader audiences. The story follows a soul granted a second chance at life in the body of a troubled teenager, using the supernatural premise to examine complex social pressures and the emotional interiority of adolescence.
The film is celebrated for its grounded, naturalistic aesthetic, which marked a departure from the more stylized tropes often associated with Sunrise productions. Hara sought a cinematic look that mirrored the stark realities of contemporary Japanese life, focusing on character-driven dialogue and atmospheric environmental storytelling. Upon its release, it received significant critical acclaim for its mature handling of themes like depression and familial estrangement, eventually winning the Jury Prize at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival.
