Where it came from
Colorful Ninja Iromaki was produced by Signal.MD as part of the Agency for Cultural Affairs' 2016 Anime Tamago project, formerly known as the Young Animator Training Project. This initiative was designed to foster the development of emerging Japanese animators by funding short-form works that allowed creators to experiment with style and narrative structure outside the constraints of long-running commercial series.
The film follows the adventures of Iromaki, a ninja who utilizes the power of colors to combat an antagonist attempting to drain the world of its vibrancy. The design aesthetic is marked by a playful, high-energy visual language that emphasizes bright palettes and fluid movement, reflecting the studio's goal of showcasing the technical potential of its rising talent. It was well received within the animation community as a charming, self-contained demonstration of creative spirit and traditional cel-style character design.
