Where it came from
Colorful was produced by Triangle Staff and aired in 1999 as a late-night anime series based on a manga by Torajiro Kishi. The series is grounded in a distinct late-nineties aesthetic, utilizing a minimalist, episodic structure to explore the lives of various characters through a lens of surrealism and social commentary. Its development came during a period when experimental, low-budget series were finding niche but dedicated audiences in the Japanese market.
The show's design is noted for its unconventional visual style, which strips away the intricate detail common in the era's mainstream animation to focus on movement and atmospheric storytelling. While it did not reach the commercial heights of more traditional genre series, it received critical attention for its willingness to subvert standard animation tropes and its bold, stylized character models. It remains a notable example of the creative freedom afforded to smaller studios during that specific window of the anime industry.
