Columbos

Columbo originated as a 1968 television pilot titled Prescription: Murder, created by Richard Levinson and William Link. The character, a disheveled yet brilliant homicide detective, was intentionally designed as an antithesis to the sleek, high-society detectives common in late-1960s media. By utilizing an inverted detective story format, the series focused on the 'howcatchem' aspect, showing the crime and the perpetrator upfront and building tension through the detective's psychological attrition of the culprit.

The character's aesthetic—the rumpled raincoat, the cigar, and the beat-up Peugeot 403—was largely shaped by Peter Falk himself. Falk worked with the series' costume designers to ensure Columbo felt grounded and authentic, eschewing a traditional Hollywood wardrobe. This design choice resonated with audiences, grounding the character in a relatable, working-class realism that helped the series maintain cultural relevance for decades.
