Thousands of years ago, the people of the planet Campbell decided to leave their planet and seek out new worlds to inhabit. One group, lead by the scientist Oreana, landed on Earth, but was delayed from their mission. In the early 21st century, Oreana's group reawakens and begins their plan to conquer the Earth. The only effective defense against the Campbellians' giant biomechanical slave beasts is the super-electromagnetic robot, Combattler V and its pilots.

Where it came from
Chodenji Robo Combattler V debuted in 1976 as a pioneering entry in the Super Robot genre. Produced by Sunrise and directed by Tadao Nagahama, the series was designed to revitalize the market for giant robot programs by introducing the concept of a multi-component machine. Its production arrived during a period of transition for anime, where the integration of elaborate transformation sequences became a standard for both narrative excitement and toy-line synergy.
The character and mechanical designs were heavily influenced by the work of Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, who sought to imbue the robotic protagonist with a sense of agility and human-like expression. The series was well-received for its dramatic focus on the team dynamics of the pilots, effectively establishing the 'team-based' robot trope that would influence later Sunrise productions. It remains a foundational text in the history of mecha animation for its successful blend of character-driven drama and technical mechanical design.
