Corpse Party: Tortured Souls was released in 2013 as a four-episode original video animation series produced by the studio Asread. It serves as an adaptation of the survival horror video game franchise originally developed by Team GrisGris, which gained a cult following for its grim themes and multiple-ending structure. The series was created to translate the interactive psychological terror of the games into a linear narrative, focusing on the students of Kisaragi Academy who are transported to the derelict Heavenly Host Elementary School.

The production aimed for a visceral aesthetic, leaning heavily into the extreme gore and transgressive horror elements that defined the source material. Directed by Akira Iwanaga, the adaptation utilizes a stark, high-contrast visual style to emphasize the claustrophobic and supernatural atmosphere of the school.
