Where it came from
Cube-Shaped Pokémon on Cubie Island?! is a 2023 original net animation produced by the Japanese visual effects and animation studio Shirogumi. It was created as a promotional tie-in for the mobile video game Pokémon Quest, a title defined by its distinctive voxel-based art style where Pokémon are reimagined as cube-shaped creatures living on Tumblecube Island.
The production leans heavily into Shirogumi's expertise in 3D computer animation, utilizing a clean, bright aesthetic that mirrors the simplified geometry of the game's assets. By presenting the characters in a high-fidelity animated format, the studio aimed to expand the charm of the game's unique design philosophy to a broader audience, emphasizing a lighthearted, episodic narrative that highlights the playful interactions between these blocky iterations of familiar Pokémon species.
