Where it came from
Cyborg 009 vs. Devilman is a three-episode original video animation series released in 2015 to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of both Shotaro Ishinomori's Cyborg 009 and Go Nagai's Devilman. Produced by the studio Actas and directed by Jun Kawagoe, the project was conceived as a high-stakes crossover that pits the iconic teams of cyborgs against the demonic forces of Akira Fudo. The production sought to balance the distinct stylistic sensibilities of the two legendary manga creators, blending Ishinomori’s tragic sci-fi aesthetic with Nagai’s darker, supernatural horror themes.
The character designs were handled with careful attention to legacy, aiming to modernize the original manga visuals while maintaining the recognizable silhouettes that have defined the properties for decades. Upon its release, the series was received by fans as a nostalgic tribute that respected the tone of the source material while utilizing contemporary animation techniques. It remains a notable example of collaborative studio work in the anime industry, bringing together two influential pillars of twentieth-century manga history in a single cohesive narrative.
