Where it came from
Cyborg 009: Legend of the Super Galaxy was produced by Toei Animation and released in 1980 as a feature-length cinematic expansion of Shotaro Ishinomori's long-running manga series. Following the success of the 1979 television series, this film was conceived to capitalize on the booming popularity of space operas in Japan during the late 1970s, moving the classic team of nine cyborgs from their traditional terrestrial settings into a grand, cosmic conflict.
The film's visual design sought to elevate the television production values, featuring updated character models and elaborate mecha sequences that reflected the era's fascination with science fiction spectacle. Directed by Masayuki Akehi, the project was received as a milestone for the franchise, serving as a definitive example of the shift toward more ambitious, big-screen storytelling within the established Cyborg 009 universe.
