Where it came from
The 2001 Cyborg 009: The Cyborg Soldier television series was produced by Avex Entertainment to commemorate the 35th anniversary of Shotaro Ishinomori's seminal manga, which first debuted in 1964. The project sought to reintroduce the classic story of nine humans kidnapped and transformed into cyborgs by the nefarious Black Ghost organization to a new generation of viewers, blending the original source material's themes of anti-war sentiment and human resilience with modern digital animation techniques.
The series was directed by Jun Kawagoe and featured character designs by Keisuke Masunaga, who aimed to respect Ishinomori’s iconic art style while providing a more contemporary, fluid aesthetic suitable for the early 2000s. Upon its release, the adaptation was well-regarded for its faithfulness to the spirit of the manga and its emotional depth, ultimately serving as a respectful tribute to Ishinomori's legacy shortly after the creator's passing.
