Since ancient times long past, this world has been ruled by two tarot cards:
Diablos Tarot—The tarot of the devil that feasts on the souls of living humans and uses that nourishment to bring countless pain and suffering.
Elemental Tarot—The tarot that draws its energy from the power of nature in order to oppose the Diablos Tarot.
Girls chosen from 22 different bloodlines become the wielders of the Elemental Tarot, plunging themselves into this secret battle. To maintain the balance of this world, while carrying unbearable guilt…
Are they executioners? Or saviors? This is the story of the long, long battle fought by girls who cannot escape the fate they bear.

Where it came from
Day Break Illusion, known in Japan as Genei o Kakeru Taiyō, was produced by Aniplex and A-1 Pictures as an original television anime series airing in the summer of 2013. The project was conceived as a darker take on the magical girl subgenre, blending traditional transformation tropes with tarot-themed occultism and psychological drama. By centering the narrative on girls who wield the power of elemental tarot cards to battle mysterious monsters called Daemonia, the production sought to explore the heavier consequences of fate and personal sacrifice.
The series features original character designs by illustrator Horly and was directed by Keizō Kusakawa. The aesthetic choice aimed to juxtapose bright, colorful character designs against an increasingly grim and sorrowful plot. While it drew moderate attention for its unique blend of dark fantasy and card-based magic mechanics, it remains a niche entry in the Aniplex catalog, recognized primarily for its thematic ambition and its willingness to lean into the more tragic elements of the magical girl framework.
