Where it came from
Produced by Studio MAPPA and directed by Konosuke Uda, the anime adaptation of Days debuted in 2016. It is based on the long-running manga series by Tsuyoshi Yasuda, which focuses on Tsukushi Tsukamoto, a timid and talentless boy who discovers a hidden passion for soccer after a chance encounter with a prodigy. The narrative follows the rigorous training and social development of the Seiseki High School soccer team, emphasizing themes of perseverance and the intense camaraderie formed through team sports.
The character designs were handled by Kazuto Nakazawa, who sought to translate Yasuda’s kinetic manga style into an expressive visual language suitable for animation. Upon its release, the series was recognized for its grounded approach to the sports genre, prioritizing character-driven storytelling and the emotional weight of athletic competition over the supernatural tropes common in other sports anime. It remains a notable entry in MAPPA's early catalog, representing their commitment to character-focused adaptations.
