Where it came from
Released in 2019, this animated feature is a collaborative anthology film centered on the popular Japanese character Dayan the Cat, created by illustrator Akiko Ikeda. The film integrates the whimsical, watercolor-inspired aesthetic of Ikeda’s 'Wachifield' fantasy world, which has been a staple of Japanese stationery and children's literature since its inception in the 1980s. The production serves as a visual celebration of Ikeda's distinct art style, bringing the feline protagonist Dayan and his friends into a cinematic format that emphasizes the tranquil, magical atmosphere of their world.
The film was produced to further expand the Wachifield franchise, which remains highly regarded for its intricate, European-influenced illustrations and gentle, anthropomorphic storytelling. By combining different narratives involving Dayan, Tama, and Tobi, the film sought to appeal to long-time fans of Ikeda's illustrations while maintaining the quiet, meditative quality that characterizes the original books. It was received as a niche but heartfelt tribute to the series, successfully capturing the artisanal, hand-drawn aesthetic that has maintained the brand's loyal following for decades.
