Where it came from
Released in 2009 by studio ZEXCS, D.C.if: Da Capo if serves as a narrative expansion within the Da Capo visual novel franchise. It was produced as a two-part original video animation (OVA) to explore an alternative timeline, specifically a 'what if' scenario that deviates from the main series' primary romantic resolutions. By focusing on a divergent path for the protagonist, Junichi Asakura, the project aimed to provide long-time fans with closure regarding secondary character arcs that remained unresolved in earlier adaptations.
The production sought to maintain the aesthetic consistency of the established Da Capo visual style, characterized by its bright, light-novel-inspired character designs. Directed by Hideki Okamoto, the OVA was crafted to satisfy a niche segment of the audience that favored a specific romantic pairing over the canon path. While it was received primarily as a fan-service-oriented supplement, it remains noted by enthusiasts for its departure from the standard harem structure common to the broader franchise.
