Maise is stuck spending the summer after her first-year of high school helping out at her family’s hotel in the sleepy seaside town, but things become a little less sleepy once Ichirou, a mysterious young man, checks into the hotel. It seems as if only Maise and Ichirou can see the strange, sudden apparitions: the hotel lobby and the room transforming into an aquarium, a giant tree erupting from the floor or the rowdy monsters laying claim to the hotel restaurant. Maise vows to figure out not just what’s causing these odd occurrences but why Ichirou has come to this remote town in the first place.

Where it came from
Deiji Meets Girl, or Deji Meets Girl, was produced by studio LIDENFILMS and released in 2021 as a series of short-form anime episodes. The project was created to explore themes of adolescence and supernatural encounters, centering on a young girl named Maise Higa who runs her family's hotel in Okinawa. Its development reflects the industry's interest in concise, atmospheric storytelling that leverages the medium's capacity for evocative, location-based animation.
The series was directed by Ushio Tazawa, who also handled the character designs, bringing a gentle and melancholic visual style that emphasizes the lush backdrop of the Okinawan islands. The animation was designed to capture a dreamlike quality, blending the mundane responsibilities of the protagonist with the arrival of a mysterious, otherworldly guest. Upon release, it was noted for its brief runtime and its focus on character-driven mood over traditional long-form narrative arcs.
