Deimos no Hanayome: Ran no Kumikyoku

Deimos no Hanayome: Ran no Kumikyoku was produced by the studio Madhouse in 1988 as an original video animation based on the long-running horror manga series by Etsuko Ikeda and Yuho Ashibe. The story draws heavily from Greek mythology, reimagining the god Deimos as a dark, supernatural figure searching for his sister, Venus, through the modern world. This specific installment, titled Ran no Kumikyoku or Orchid Suite, serves as a standalone adaptation that captures the gothic atmosphere and tragic romantic sensibilities prevalent in late 1980s dark shojo manga.

The animation reflects the aesthetic trends of the late eighties, emphasizing expressive character designs and a moody, atmospheric color palette intended to evoke the haunting tone of the source material. While Madhouse was establishing its reputation for high-quality production values during this period, this OVA is remembered primarily by genre enthusiasts for its commitment to the macabre and unsettling tone of the original print work, acting as a bridge between the classic manga's gothic foundations and the emerging experimental styles of the OVA market.
