Where it came from
Released in 2013 as the seventeenth installment in the long-running Detective Conan film franchise, Private Eye in the Distant Sea was produced by TMS Entertainment. The film is set aboard a high-tech Aegis-equipped vessel of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, moving the mystery away from the series' usual urban settings and into the confined, high-stakes environment of a naval combat ship. This shift in setting was intended to blend the series' traditional deduction-heavy storytelling with a more modern, suspenseful atmosphere involving espionage and international tensions.
Directed by Kobun Shizuno, the film maintains the series' characteristic focus on intricate locked-room puzzles and the dual identity of its protagonist. While the animation style adheres to the established visual language of the manga and TV series, the production utilized the naval setting to experiment with a more expansive, cinematic scale. The film was well-received by the franchise's established audience, praised for its technical research regarding naval systems and for providing a tighter, more focused mystery compared to some of the franchise's more action-oriented entries.
