Where it came from
Released in 2005, Detective Conan: Strategy Above the Depths serves as the ninth feature film in the long-running anime franchise based on Gosho Aoyama’s manga. The film was produced by TMS Entertainment and directed by Yasuichiro Yamamoto, following the series' established tradition of centering its theatrical releases around high-stakes, contained mysteries. By this point in the series' history, the films had become annual box-office staples in Japan, consistently expanding the scale of Conan Edogawa’s cases to cinematic proportions.
The film’s narrative focuses on a murder mystery set aboard a luxurious cruise ship, utilizing the classic 'locked-room' trope to heighten the tension. The design and pacing reflect the era's transition toward more sophisticated digital animation techniques while maintaining the character aesthetic familiar to viewers of the long-running television series. It received a standard reception from franchise enthusiasts, who praised the film for its focus on the intellectual dynamic between Conan and Kogoro Mouri, reinforcing the core themes of deduction and character development that defined the series in the mid-2000s.
