Detective Conan: The Culprit Hanzawa

Detective Conan: The Culprit Hanzawa was released in 2022 as a spin-off comedy series based on the long-running mystery manga franchise by Gosho Aoyama. Produced by TMS Entertainment, the show centers on the iconic 'shadow man' silhouette—the trope used in the original series to represent an unidentified criminal—and transforms this nameless antagonist into a protagonist navigating the high-crime environment of Beika Town. The project served as a self-aware, parodic expansion of the established Conan universe, aiming to provide a comedic perspective on the absurd density of murder cases depicted in the main series.

The character design for Hanzawa was originally developed by Mayuko Kanba in the serialized manga, emphasizing a stark, minimalist aesthetic that contrasts with the detailed character art typical of the franchise. The animation style maintained the familiar visual language of the parent show while leaning into surreal physical comedy and genre satire. Upon its release, the series was received as a lighthearted tribute for dedicated fans, successfully humanizing the ubiquitous faceless culprit while highlighting the inherent absurdities of the detective genre.
