Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire

Released in 2019 as the twenty-third installment in the long-running Detective Conan film series, The Fist of Blue Sapphire marked a significant shift in scope for the franchise. The production, helmed by director Tomoka Nagaoka and produced by TMS Entertainment, moved the setting of the mystery outside of Japan for the first time, taking the core cast to Singapore. This decision was designed to inject a fresh international flair into the series while leveraging the backdrop of the Marina Bay Sands and other iconic local landmarks to appeal to a growing global audience.

The film was scripted by Takahiro Okura, who aimed to emphasize the central dynamic between Conan Edogawa, Kaito Kid, and Makoto Kyogoku. By focusing on a high-stakes heist involving a legendary sapphire, the story leaned heavily into the action-adventure tropes that have defined the later movies in the franchise. Upon its release, it was met with significant commercial success in the Japanese box office, praised by fans for its polished animation and the unusual, personality-driven team-up of its three primary male protagonists.
