Synopsis

Ran has a nightmare about her mother dying, but starts to remember what really happened involving herself, her mother, and her father from 10 years ago. Meanwhile, people are being injured by a certain culprit. Conan soon realizes that these people all have some kind of relation to Mouri, and that they all had a number in their name corresponding to a playing card and were being targeted in order, from the king down to the ace. The police soon decide that a murderous card dealer who just got out of jail and wanted revenge on Mouri is behind it. However, as injuries become murders and it is a race to predict who the next victims will be, Conan soon finds that the truth is something completely different, while learning about the incident from 10 years ago in the process.

Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1998, Detective Conan: The Fourteenth Target represents the second theatrical entry in the long-running anime franchise based on the manga by Gosho Aoyama. Produced by TMS Entertainment, the film was conceived to capitalize on the massive success of the inaugural movie, aiming to elevate the series with higher stakes, a more elaborate mystery structure, and cinematic animation quality that surpassed the standard television production. It fits into a period of rapid growth for the franchise, serving as an early example of the annual theatrical event model that has since defined the series.

The film was directed by Kenji Kodama, a veteran of the television series, who sought to blend the classic 'whodunit' detective narrative with the high-octane action sequences that became a hallmark of the movies. The design of the mystery, centered around a sequence of attacks based on a playing card motif, was intended to challenge the protagonist's deductive skills while exploring his past personal connections. Upon its release, it was well-received by audiences and critics alike for its intricate plotting and character-driven drama, helping to solidify the franchise's standing in Japanese pop culture.
