Detective Conan: The Last Wizard of the Century

Released in 1999 as the third entry in the long-running Detective Conan film series, The Last Wizard of the Century was directed by Kenji Kodama and produced by TMS Entertainment. The narrative centers on the mystery of a Romanov dynasty Easter egg, intertwining the series' signature deductive puzzle-solving with historical intrigue involving the Fabergé eggs. This film is historically significant for being the first to feature the elusive thief Kaito Kid, a character created by Gosho Aoyama for his separate manga series, Magic Kaito, who subsequently became a fan-favorite antagonist in the main Conan canon.

The film was designed to elevate the stakes of the franchise by introducing grander, cinematic set pieces and emotional weight through the introduction of historical elements and new characters. Visually, it adheres to the established aesthetic of the late 1990s television series, maintaining a focus on character-driven dialogue and intricate crime scenes. Upon release, it was well-received by audiences and critics alike, securing its place as a pivotal installment that successfully expanded the universe beyond the central protagonist, Conan Edogawa, setting a precedent for the cinematic crossovers and guest characters that define the films today.
