Where it came from
Released in 2002, Detective Conan: The Phantom of Baker Street serves as the sixth entry in the long-running animated film series based on Gosho Aoyama’s manga. The production was helmed by director Kenji Kodama at TMS Entertainment, aiming to elevate the franchise by weaving the mystery into a sophisticated virtual reality simulation of 19th-century London. This narrative choice allowed the studio to pay homage to the Arthur Conan Doyle stories that served as the primary inspiration for the original manga.
The screenplay by Hiroshi Kashiwabara was noted for its ambitious departure from standard mystery tropes, blending high-stakes technology with historical fiction. Upon its release, the film was well-received for its complex plot and emotional depth, becoming one of the most celebrated entries in the series. It remains a hallmark of the franchise, marking a transition point where the films began to experiment more boldly with thematic scale and darker, more philosophical narratives.
