Dirty Pair: Project Eden

Project Eden serves as the feature-length cinematic entry in the Dirty Pair franchise, which originated from a series of light novels by Haruka Takachiho. Produced by Sunrise and released in 1987, the film follows Kei and Yuri, the 'Lovely Angels' of the World Welfare Works Association, as they navigate a mission on a hazardous mining planet. The animation reflects the high-octane, tongue-in-cheek aesthetic of the mid-1980s sci-fi boom, balancing slapstick humor with stylized action sequences that helped define the series' enduring appeal.

The film's visual design was heavily influenced by the character work of Tsukasa Kotobuki, whose illustrations for the series were instrumental in establishing the iconic aesthetic of the duo. Released during a period when Japanese animation was rapidly expanding into international markets, Project Eden was later distributed in North America by The Right Stuf International. It was received as a quintessential example of the 'space opera' genre, praised for its colorful character dynamics and the adventurous, lighthearted tone that distinguished it from the more somber, mechanical-heavy anime popular at the time.
